Frontier Firearms USA is an employee-owned gun store, indoor shooting range, and firearms training center in Kingston, Tennessee.  Since 2010, Frontier has trained more than 25,000 students.  We are committed to responsible gun ownership, excellent instruction, and making every customer and student feel welcome.  Our goal is to make training and doing business with Frontier as easy and positive as possible, and our contract instructors are an important part of that experience.

We are looking for professional contract instructors who enjoy teaching, work well with new shooters, and want the flexibility to choose the classes they teach.  The right instructor can teach established Frontier programs, provide private instruction, and help us expand our schedule with new classes in areas where they have proven expertise.

What You May Teach

Depending on your certifications, experience, and the assignments you choose to accept, teaching opportunities may include:

• Frontier's custom Basic Handgun Safety / Tennessee Concealed Handgun Carry Permit class (Frontier curriculum, not the NRA Basic Pistol course).

• Tennessee Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit classes.

• Ladies First Handgun Fundamentals and Concealed Carry Permit classes.

• Coed Handgun Fundamentals and Concealed Carry Permit classes.

• Carry for Life!© Defensive Pistol Series I, II, III, and IV.

• Carry for Life!© Fundamentals of the AR-15.

• Private, personal, and remedial firearms instruction.

• Firearms training and qualification.

• Instruction involving handguns and, when appropriate to the course, instructor qualifications, and Frontier facility rules, rifles/AR-platform firearms or shotguns.

Bring Your Own Ideas

Frontier has room in its schedule for qualified instructors to develop and teach new classes.  If you already have a successful course, specialty, or class concept that fits our customers and facilities, we want to hear about it.  We develop new courses by mutual agreement on curriculum, safety, scheduling, marketing, and compensation.

Schedule and Flexibility

Available classes may be scheduled on Saturday mornings or afternoons, weekday afternoons or evenings, and selected Sunday afternoons.  Many instructors may choose to teach about two classes per month, with opportunities to accept more classes when available.

You choose which offered assignments you want to accept.  There is no minimum number of classes required, and contract instructors remain free to teach for other organizations, in other ranges, or for their own clients.

Compensation

Compensation is based on the class or instructional assignment and may vary with student attendance.  Under Frontier's current compensation structure, class compensation ranges from approximately $20.00 to $62.50 per instructional hour, depending on the class and the number of students.

Instructors are encouraged, but not required, to help promote the classes they accept.  Stronger enrollment can increase compensation when the applicable class formula is based on attendance.

What Makes a Great Frontier Instructor

We are looking for an instructor who is first and foremost an excellent teacher.  The ideal instructor is patient, safety-conscious, knowledgeable, professional, and comfortable working with both first-time shooters and experienced gun owners.

• Explain firearm safety and shooting concepts clearly and in plain English.

• Build confidence without intimidating or embarrassing inexperienced students.

• Diagnose shooting problems and provide practical, positive coaching.

• Manage classroom and live-fire safety independently.

• Communicate professionally with students of different ages, backgrounds, experience levels, and physical abilities.

• Demonstrate sound judgment, safe gun handling, and a calm professional presence.

Responsibilities

• Provide firearms training, qualification, private instruction, and remedial instruction for accepted assignments.

• Conduct appropriate inspections of student firearms before live-fire exercises.

• Follow applicable local, state, and federal firearm laws and current Tennessee handgun-instructor requirements.

• Complete required Tennessee handgun instructor data entry and course reporting in the state-designated system.

• Welcome students and customers attending classes and assist with class-related questions.

• Check in and register students using Eventbrite when required for the assigned class.

• Follow Frontier firearms-safety protocols, Range SOP, emergency procedures, and eye/hearing PPE requirements.

• Complete Frontier's lead-hazard and range-hygiene orientation and follow its lead-safety practices.

• Maintain an orderly, safe classroom and range environment during instruction.

• Use PowerPoint and established lesson materials for Frontier courses when applicable.

• Represent Frontier Firearms and any sponsored products professionally when applicable.

• Meet Frontier's professional appearance and safe-range attire standards.

• Promote Frontier classes professionally when the instructor chooses to support enrollment.

The Frontier Class Experience

Frontier has several class traditions and administrative steps that help create a consistent student experience.  Contract instructors are expected to include the applicable items for the class they are teaching:

• Confirm required Frontier range waivers and course forms are completed.

• Ensure students complete the required Frontier range-safety orientation and videos before live-fire participation.

• Open applicable classes by giving students the opportunity to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance.

• Invite students to sign Frontier's Second Amendment Wall.

• Provide students access to Frontier's after-class evaluation.

Participation in the Pledge of Allegiance and signing the Second Amendment Wall is voluntary for each student.  For Tennessee Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit classes, Frontier-specific activities are scheduled to avoid interfering with state-mandated course requirements.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.

• At least 21 years of age and legally eligible to possess and use firearms.

• At least two years of firearms-safety and concealed-carry instruction experience.

• A recognized firearms-instructor credential, such as NRA Basic Pistol Instructor, USCCA instructor certification, Law Enforcement Pistol Instructor, or another credential appropriate to the classes being taught.

• NRA Range Safety Officer certification or an equivalent range-safety credential; ability to obtain an acceptable credential before the first live-fire assignment may be considered.

• Current Tennessee Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit.

• Current Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Handgun Instructor certification for instructors accepting Tennessee Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit assignments.

• Strong knowledge of firearm safety and sound range practices.

• Ability to independently manage classroom and live-fire safety.

• Strong public-speaking, interpersonal, and customer-service skills.

• Computer skills sufficient to use PowerPoint, lesson materials, Eventbrite, and required state reporting systems.

• Professional firearms-instructor liability insurance of at least $1 million per occurrence, with aggregate limits acceptable to Frontier and its insurer.

• Ability to safely lift approximately 30 pounds overhead when course setup or instructional equipment requires it.

• Availability for at least some weekday, weeknight, Saturday, or Sunday assignments.

Preferred Background

• Military or law-enforcement firearms-instructor experience.

• Legal, tactical, defensive, or non-lethal training experience relevant to civilian firearms instruction.

• Experience teaching women, beginners, or apprehensive shooters.

• Defensive-pistol or AR-platform instructional experience.

• Experience developing firearms-training curriculum or established specialty classes.

• Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification.

Professional Appearance and Conduct

Frontier instructors are highly visible to students and customers.  Contract instructors must maintain a neat, clean, professional appearance and demeanor, wear clothing and footwear appropriate for classroom and live-fire activities, use professional language, and treat students with patience and respect.

Contractor Basics

This is an independent-contractor opportunity, not a regular employee position.  Contract instructors maintain their own professional credentials and instructor insurance, may work for other organizations or clients, and submit a written invoice for each completed class or instructional assignment.  We require a completed IRS Form W-9 before initial contractor payment.  Instructors are responsible for their own tax obligations.
